About Madeline

Hi, I'm Maddy! I am a civil engineer. I work onsite at a big engineering company while also completing my degree in civil engineering. Experience: I worked in a tuition centre for two years teaching maths, English and science to kids aged 4-11 and enjoyed it a lot! I have also volunteered at a local primary school for a year and connected with the children very well there, helping them with their reading and maths skills. This awoke my passion for teaching others what I have learnt as I think that is so valuable to others and myself! The pupils that I have taught have progressed a lot and passed many of their upcoming exams like 11+ with excellent results. I also received excellent GCSE and A-level results and I'm responsible and love working with students to help them flourish and improve. Subjects; The main subjects I specialise in are English literature and language. I received the top level for both of these in my A levels. I can teach creative writing skills as well and enjoy reading and writing to this day in my own time. I also do Maths and Science lessons up to KS1-KS2 level. Interests: I love playing hockey and I play every week at my local club training and playing matches. I am also currently learning German and hoping to become fluent! I love reading with my favourite genres being Fantasy and nonfiction - to do with Space. I am very flexible in what I teach as I have been tutoring for 3 years now with plenty of experience in different teaching styles whether that be visual learning (showing diagrams, pictures and videos) or acoustic learning (sounding out words and sentences and more talking). I look forward to meeting and getting to know you! Maddy

I am a responsible but also fun tutor. I like to let my students set goals at the beginning of the session to achieve by the end. I am a good listener with a lot of patience. I make the lessons fun by creating educational games and I think helps to learn more effectively. I know how to cater to each individual's needs whether that be different types of learning - visual (e.g. diagrams), auditory - (listening to someone explain, music, podcasts) and cognitive - (finding out the 'why' behind what you are learning to really understand the concept). I cater or combine these approaches to create the best session and results. I specialise in 7+ and 11+ preparation as well.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in my chosen field since I was 16. I've always enjoyed my subjects and wanted to pass on that knowledge. I then joined a tuition center for younger kids and really enjoyed it. Helping students understand and appreciate the subjects that I love has been a rewarding experience, and it solidified my passion for tutoring.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach English and maths, mostly focusing on English literature and language. I love teaching and discussing creative writing the best because it allows students to express themselves and explore their imaginations. While I enjoy most aspects of teaching, I find that grammar can sometimes be less exciting. However, I make an effort to connect it to practical writing and communication skills to keep it engaging for my students.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, my first tutor was a significant role model for me. They made me much more confident in topics and subjects that I did not like because I was not good at them. Their patience and innovative teaching methods inspired me to pursue tutoring and help other students gain the same confidence and understanding.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think patience and fun are the main qualities of a good tutor. Finding specific techniques that work with certain students is essential, but creating a rapport is equally important. A good tutor needs to be adaptable, empathetic, and passionate about teaching. Building a positive and encouraging learning environment helps students feel comfortable and motivated to learn.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I originally did not like Shakespeare because I did not understand it. However, at school, we were made to create a short play on the Shakespeare play "Measure for Measure" in modern-day life. This activity made it very fun and super easy to understand! It showed me how creative approaches to teaching can make difficult subjects enjoyable and accessible.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I originally did not enjoy poetry when I was at school because it was difficult to understand. I then took extra classes in my own time to understand poetry and its uses more. Now, it's one of my favorite things to read and write about! This experience taught me the value of perseverance and seeking additional resources to overcome challenges.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love playing hockey! I have been playing for over 8 years now, and it's a great way to keep fit, but it's also very physical. I loved watching GB win gold in the 2012 Olympics for hockey. This passion for sports helps me maintain a balanced lifestyle and brings a sense of discipline and teamwork to my teaching approach.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I am a great tutor because I love what I do, and I hope this is evident and therefore infectious! I aim to make things that may seem difficult at a glance, such as Shakespeare, super easy to understand and therefore enjoyable. My dedication to making learning fun and accessible helps my students develop a genuine interest in the subjects I teach.
