About Willy

I started playing piano, clarinet, and cello when I was 7. When I was 10 I was playing Jaco Pastorius note for note. My first gig was the Tonight Show at 10. I’ve played with Sammy Davis, Jr., and Jerry Lewis when I was 17. I went to school at North Texas State. Growing up in Portland in the 80s didn’t leave for much opportunity locally, so I went off to save the world. After NTSU, I was selected to play bass for the Jazz Ambassadors, the official Jazz ensemble of the army and the White House. That experience was surreal. We performed for Saddam Hussein, Fidel Castro, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, as well as being a world-class big band, playing the world’s major jazz festivals. I don’t go on and on about my education: I grew up doing THIS. I had offers for full scholarships from Juilliard, Harvard, and NTSU. I was poor, I saw my education being something that I would be in debt to for too long. Knowing the starting pay for musicians ($0), I didn’t want that. I was better than my professors, auditioned for the army band and got the gig. After I got out I had a second career as a rock star. I’ve never had a day job, I’ve fed four kids and bought a house playing a bass. I don’t do luck. I’m just really good. I’m not the best, but I can deliver Jaco or James Jamerson with equal skill. I have four kids, three boys and a girl. I raised ‘em and taught them well. They’re all successful humans. Anything I can do with a bass is second to the pride of my children.

My youngest son is autistic. I’ve been Mr. Mom by day and full-time musician by night for 30 years. I have four kids. In learning how to teach my son daily living, I have something unique to offer in zeroing in on what you can achieve, and don’t know it yet. “I got skills…” … sometimes inside the box, sometimes outside the box. I went to NTSU, jazz studies… my knowledge of theory is as good as anyone else’s. I know how to give you what you’re looking for in learning how to play bass, and in the bigger picture: music... Groove, and Time. Keeping it fun and challenging. Making sure you get your hard-earned money's worth. I’m not a clock watcher, I’m extremely kind, empathetic, and pretty hilarious. My favorite age group to teach is 5-15. Parents of special needs kids? I’ll try. Without promises. But I will go the distance to try. I’ll work with you on $fee’s. I’m not here to get rich, I’m here because I love music and I love people. If you can afford it, I expect you to pay full without discussion. If you can’t afford it, let’s discuss it.
