About Jamie
I'm a Neuroscience graduate from the University of Edinburgh, which shapes how I teach: much of my study was about memory and pattern recognition, and those are exactly the skills chess improvement depends on, so I bring that understanding directly into how I structure lessons.
On the chess side, I peaked at 1900 rapid on Chess.com. Alongside chess I've tutored privately in English, so I'm comfortable explaining things clearly and adapting to how each person learns. Clear explanation and practical training is what I focus on.

My teaching is built around how people actually learn, using evidence-based methods: active recall, spaced repetition of key patterns, and plenty of hands-on play rather than lecturing. Chess improvement really comes down to pattern recognition and memory, so I structure lessons to build both deliberately.
In practice, we work mostly from your own games. I'll help you spot the recurring mistakes holding you back, drill the tactical patterns and endgames that give the fastest results, and teach opening principles you understand rather than moves you memorise. Every student gets a simple plan to work on between sessions so progress carries over.
Lessons are usually 60 minutes, one-to-one and online, with shorter or longer sessions available if that suits you better. I keep the pace and focus tailored to the individual rather than following a fixed syllabus.
Lessons are aimed at beginners through to intermediate and improving club-level players, and suit teenagers and adults alike, whether you're learning from scratch or trying to break through a plateau.
