About Ben

Hello everyone, I am Ben!

With my aforementioned skills and experience, I aim to teach the new generation and inspire them to cherish the game of chess just as I did when I started at nine years old. At 20 years old, I am pursuing a degree in finance while also aiming to coach students in chess.

What sets me apart:

While I also play standard chess, I am also an avid chess composer. Since 2017, my compositions have earned many notable achievements. For example, two of my compositions have earned second place in the Youth Chess Composing Challenge (YCCC), and I have also earned a trophy from one of my chess studies. One of my chess studies even led me to have the incredible honor of being interviewed by the renowned Grandmaster Judit Polgar. This background in endgame studies will enable me to present creative and tactical patterns that can be utilized in your own games!

Online chess skill:
On lichess.org, my skills reflect my ability to present each part of the game through my ratings:

Bullet: Peak of 2739
Rapid: Peak of 2532

Whether you just started playing chess or are an aspiring competitive player, I will provide lessons so you feel more confident and achieve your chess goals!

Before beginning the lessons, I provide two free complimentary lessons so the student as well as their guardian can feel comfortable with my coaching approach! Note that the extra lesson is a bonus from me! During these lessons, I would focus on the student's strengths and weaknesses so as to build a guide on what needs to be taught for our future training.

My lessons will use modern tools such as opening theory books, endgame tablebases and studies, as well as master games which can be explored through the Lichess database.

I will help student master every key component of the chess game through:

Opening skills: Understanding theory, developmental principles, and how to fight for positional or tactical advantages out of the opening.

Tactical and defensive skills: Understanding when your opponent’s position is vulnerable, when to sacrifice, and when to defend against an attack, and at times even counterattack!

Middlegame skills: Which include strong positional and tactical understanding and learning how to transition into a favorable endgame!

Positional skills: Understanding possible weaknesses such as vulnerable squares, weak pawns, or inactive pieces and how to use your opponents positional weaknesses to your advantage.

Endgame skills: Understanding the fundamentals of different types of endgames, such as rook and pawns, king and pawns, and understanding how to use possible weaknesses to your own advantage in your own endgames! I will also teach how to defend against possible lost endgame positions so you can triumph in a draw even when the odds are against you!
