About Mary
I hold BS and MS degrees in Chemistry and have worked as a chemist for 13 years. I taught middle school physical science in a rural public school system for one year, and during graduate school I was a TA for general chemistry laboratory and recitation sessions. Before I became a chemist, I was actually an English major. I believe there are no "math people" and "liberal arts people" and anyone who wants to learn and puts in the work will be successful. I incorporate writing in my lessons because if a student can competently describe in writing a concept or a procedure, that means they really have mastered it.

I meet my students where they are and I try to diagnose the route cause of difficulties with the material. For example, people who have difficulty balancing chemical reactions may need a refresher in fractions. I also try to use metaphors and visuals to make esoteric concepts come alive. I measure my success as a teacher by how well my student can explain to me how to solve a computational problem or how well they explain a concept back to me.
