About Tait

I have three years of tutoring experience as the former chemistry tutor for Carrington College, supporting countless students. I have always had a passion for STEM education, even before my time at Otago, and bring a broad array of expertise across all Otago Chemistry subjects, and also in other areas such as CELS191, zoology, and earth sciences. My teaching is aimed at students of any year level and familiarity with chemistry as long as they are keen to learn and I believe that anyone can master the subject with the right help.

I completed CHEM191 in 2018 with a score of 99%, and a 96% in CHEM111. I graduated with my PhD in 2025, studying the structure of properties of ice crystals on other planets at Otago and overseas with NASA.

About the lesson

I teach the Otago chemistry curriculum at all year levels, with a special emphasis on students looking to excel in the Health Science First Year paper CHEM191, and the other first year paper CHEM111, helping students achieve the results they want. Education in chemistry isn’t about memorization or jargon, it's about making difficult concepts understandable by connecting simple principles together. I help students develop the foundational knowledge of these principles, and the critical thinking and pattern recognition skills needed to see familiar connections in unfamiliar problems.

My approach is student-led, focusing first on the stickiest areas, and building out understanding from there at their own pace. Lessons combine student questions about lecture material, worked examples, and past-papers, depending on the student’s needs and learning style. I also teach time-saving techniques and exam strategy for getting the best results on the day and I share the tips and tricks I’ve picked up across my 8 years studying chemistry.

My goal is to help students achieve their academic goals, be it to maximize their grade for entrance into Medicine or Dentistry, building confidence with a difficult paper, or to gain mastery over chemistry itself for further study into the sciences.
