About Tania

I am a BC-certified special needs teacher with a B. Ed. from Queens University available to support students from K to gr. 12 with online tutoring. I have 17 years experience as a full-time tutor for children with special needs.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with a wide variety of families over the years taking care to honour the uniqueness of each child and family and their approach to learning.
• 17 years as a full-time tutor for homelearning children with and without special needs
• 5 years experience teaching K to gr. 8 in the public system and in an independent school
• 3 years experience as a Special Student Assistant in a public school
• completed Special Ed Part 1 course at UWO
• attended many workshops, conferences, and taken courses learning about a variety of special needs
• extensive experience with a variety of children with special needs (including ASD, learning disabilities, ADHD, and dyslexia)
• experience tutoring math to gr. 12
• tutored many home learning students as well as students in school
• only tutoring online using a variety of online tools
• friendly, fun, and patient; loves children; emphasis on hands-on, relevant learning

I feel my strength is in my ability to respect and honour children and meet them where they're at - getting to know them and how best to assist them to reach their full potential and ultimately to be happy.

About the lesson

The value of individual tutoring is that the lesson can be tailored to the particular needs of the student at that point in time. As a result, each session will be unique and based on the student's goals, interests, challenges and needs.

I feel that inspiring confidence, building rapport, and fostering a love of learning are at least as important as the content of the lesson. As I get to know a student I can figure out where they need help and practice and how to challenge them just the right amount. I also like to make our sessions are fun and relevant as possible and keep "lecturing" to a minimum emphasizing learning by doing.

I like to use a variety of modalities when possible and again, depending on what works best for the student. I use an online whiteboard and Zoom which offers the option of remote control. I can provide options for further practice and write a brief summary of the session to parents.
