About Skyla

I am a born and bread South African citizen who is a native speaker o the language English, however, am also able to communicate in Afrikaans, making myself bilingual. Through my various qualifications and information within my provided resume, you can see that I have experience in leadership roles, and high accolades, and am currently pursuing a BCom Management Sciences degree at the University of Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa. I was also awarded the top business student merit at Stellenberg High School (2018) and have achieved multiple sporting accolades, such as Western Province colours in hockey (2015). What makes me suitable to be your teacher would be my knowledge, personality, and experience which I have built up and gained through not only my education but also through many teaching and instructing encounters that I have had with children (such as my former job of an u11 boys hockey coach) and various leadership positions that I have undertaken. I have found myself in numerous leadership roles in my lifetime, whether it is being a member of the school’s student council, a prefect, or even a captain of my former hockey and football teams. Within each role I have been required to teach and instruct others in some way or form, and, therefore, having to change my teaching approach in order to suit the individual, whether be it a teammate or a young student. I have also learned that as a teacher, you are sometimes required to become more like the student. This will not only create a more comfortable and engaging environment for the student but will also allow the teacher to begin to understand perspectives from the student’s point of view. However, the biggest role of teaching I have ever had is that of being the eldest brother of three boys. This has required me to mature at a faster rate and also to be somewhat of a teacher to my two younger siblings, teaching them life lessons, instructing them on what is the correct option to take concerning certain situations, “showing them the ropes”, and doing all this in such a way that would be easy for them to comprehend. I understand that being a teacher is no job for the faint-hearted and requires one to put the needs of the students above their own. I would consider myself as a very easy-going person, one who is comfortable to be around, and easy to engage with.

As I am a student myself, I would try to use a methodology that may suit the student. I have also learnt that as a teacher, you are sometimes required to become more like the student. This will not only create a more comfortable and engaging environment for the student, but will also allow the teacher to begin to understand perspectives from the student’s point of view. Within a typical lesson with myself, you can expect that there would be a few jokes here and there, constant help if help is needed, and for the specified work to be brought forward and handled in the correct way. My lessons are aimed at ensuring that the students are well equipped, comfortable, and able to both understand and apply the specified knowledge. I am also willing to take the appropriate time needed in order to ensure that the student understands the specified work.
