About Sam

I am a third-year University student new to tutoring, but keen to make a difference in students' lives.

Discovering English Literature and all the powers of Language Analysis in Year Ten changed my life, and I want to pass on that passion and enthusiasm (as well as years of exam advice!) to my students.

I went to a school where results are not good, and neither of parents have any GCSEs so I learnt how to teach and motivate myself and hope to pass on these skills to students.

I usually take a social and political perspective on texts, as I now study social sciences at Cambridge University, and believe the lessons I have learnt here are valuable in approaching English Literature from a more creative and critical angle. My lessons are based on question practice and feedback, and lots of discussion. I encourage students to bring their own ideas to the lessons and to help me shape the syllabus if they feel able.

For less secure students, I offer a complete structured course consisting of exam-style drills and sample answers.

In the future, I hope to be a University Professor specialising in Social Anthropology, so this teaching experience is very valuable to me.

In my free time, I enjoy rowing, climbing, and generally being outdoors. I write poetry and read a lot - as well as watch a lot of football!

About the lesson

I teach both English GCSEs after achieving grade 9 in both exams. I have studied the exams inside and out and regularly teach using sample answers I prepare for each student, guiding them through a method to tackle each individual question. My lessons usually last around one hour.

I am currently working on the AQA syllabus, with the texts: Jekyll and Hyde, An Inspector Calls, Lord of the Flies, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and both poetry collections: Power and Conflict, and Love and Relationships.

I am also a poet and can teach creative writing to students.

I am working on tackling the A-level syllabus for the texts Frankenstein, A Streetcar Named Desire, Othello and A Handmaids Tale, as well as English Literature coursework.

I can also assist with Oxbridge University applications, and offer reduced rates for State School educated students or students from disadvantaged backgrounds, please contact me directly about this.

I am new to tutoring so am currently offering reduced rates whilst I practice my skills.
