About Ellie

About me:

I give lessons and admissions to secondary and sixth form students. I tutor Biology and English to GCSE, and Sociology to A Level. I am a friendly Welsh finalist at Cambridge university studying Human, Social and Political Sciences and specialising in Sociology. I have experience with Admissions outreach and teaching.

I come from a small town called Hay-on-Wye in rural Wales. Alongside my studies, I like to rock climb and play netball. I will begin teacher training with Teach First in June.

Experience:

As part of my preparation for the Teach First programme, I have passed the English and Numeracy professional skills tests and the Curriculum Knowledge Assessment for English Literature and English Language GCSEs. I have also taken the online preparation course and completed a 5 day school observation experience. I have worked for three years as an Access Ambassador and student mentor at my college, providing tours and application guidance to visiting students from ages 11 to 18. I enjoy this work immensely and three of the students that I have worked with are currently studying at my college, after applying after their visits in year 13. I have provided email mentoring to applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds who had an offer to study at Jesus College.

I have also tutored the child of a family friend for free ofr 5 hours. I helped him with Year 8 maths, and saw greatly improved understanding in that time.

I have 10 A* grades at GCSE including English and Maths. I achieved two A* grades in English Literature and Biology at A level, as well as an A in Modern History. I have a Level 4 diploma in Speech and Drama. I attended a state comprehensive school.

I am also Dyspraxic, and have been provided with excellent mentoring and study skills sessions by the university. I run a blog which gives advice to Dyspraxic students, which you can find by typing 'Dyspraxia Survival Guide' into a search engine.

Teaching methods

Although based around interactive and engaging learning, I take a very structured approach to lesson planning. I do this by taking a particular area or point on a specification, and creating learning objectives for each lesson to ensure this section is learnt. I include a recap of these objectives at the end of each lesson.

I like to make my lessons interactive and fun, and adapt them to suit the student's individual learning style. I also add interesting details and facts which aren't on the exam specification to ensure students' exam answers stand out, and to aid memory through piquing interest in a topic.

As a Dyspraxic student, I understand that students learn in a number of different ways. I ensure to discuss with the student how they like to learn, and adapt my lessons to suit their style and strengths.
