About Richard

I love teaching languages. I have taught Latin and Spanish in both the independent and maintained sectors and have run Adult Education courses for Local Authorities. I tutor Latin, Spanish and French at both GCSE and “A” Level. My strength as a tutor is in being able to detect the areas of knowledge or skill with which the student needs help and tailoring the lessons to improve the student’s performance in those areas. Having examined many past papers at both GCSE and A Level, I am very familiar with the examination style and content in my subjects of expertise. I graduated in Classics (Latin and Ancient Greek) from Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1987. My passion for languages led me to use my Latin as a springboard from which to learn French, Spanish, Catalan and Italian. My second language is Spanish. I hold the Diploma de Español como Lingua Extranjera and lived in Barcelona for four years where I worked as an interpreter in the law courts. I studied French at school in England and while working as an interpreter in Spain. On returning to the UK, I resumed my French studies with the Institut Français in London where I attained the Institute’s level Supérieur 4. I hold an up to date Enhanced DBS Certificate. I have known Richard for more than 8 years. We met thanks to South Kensington Language Exchange group which Richard attended in order to practice his Spanish, French and Italian. We have stayed in touch over the years and have helped each other on many occasions with our respective target languages of English and Italian. Richard has an excellent understanding of grammar from his classical studies of Latin (at Cambridge University) and is able to grasp and explain concepts easily. He is a very competent teacher as he is able to combine academic knowledge with good communication skills.
