About James

I’m a Physics graduate from the University of Cambridge, where I studied Natural Sciences with a focus on Physics. Before university, I achieved A*s in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Geography at A level.

I’ve always enjoyed understanding how and why things work, particularly when it comes to the problem-solving involved in Mathematics and Physics. I now enjoy passing that enthusiasm on to students and helping them develop the same confidence in tackling challenging problems.

What I think makes me effective as a tutor is my ability to explain difficult ideas clearly and from different angles. If something doesn’t make sense initially, I’m happy to approach it in a completely different way until it does. I also remember what it is like to find a topic difficult, so I try to make lessons supportive without losing the academic challenge.

Outside of academics, I’m a keen rugby player. I enjoy the discipline and teamwork involved in the sport, and I bring the same patient and encouraging approach to my tutoring.

About the lesson

I’m a Physics graduate from the University of Cambridge, having achieved A*s in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Geography at A level. I tutor GCSE and A level Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics.

I particularly enjoy helping students develop a genuine understanding of difficult ideas rather than simply memorising methods. My own experience studying these subjects at a high level has given me a strong understanding of both the content and the problem-solving skills needed to tackle unfamiliar questions.

My lessons are structured and fully prepared in advance, but tailored to each student. I start by identifying their strengths, gaps and goals, then build lessons around what will be most useful for them. This might involve strengthening fundamentals, working through difficult topics, developing problem-solving skills or focusing specifically on exam technique.

I use clear explanations, worked examples and increasingly challenging questions, always focusing on the reasoning behind each method. I also keep track of progress so that each lesson builds naturally on the previous one.

Most importantly, I want students to feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. My aim is not only to improve grades, but to help students become more confident and independent in their ability to solve problems.
