About Stephen
I completed my undergraduate degree in English at Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge in 2018, and I am pursuing a Master's degree in Modern Literature in London in the forthcoming academic year. I have helped a number of family members and friends prepare for GCSE examinations, and am comfortable tutoring any aspect of English up to undergraduate level. I was involved in mentoring programs during my time at seconday school, helping struggling students to better perform in humanities subjects.
I have several year's teaching experience from my time as a senior student volunteer at the Pate's Grammar School Combined Cadet Force, where I was a PT instructor for two years, in the latter of which I was head of the department.

Some tutors see lessons as a one-way exchange: they teach their lesson, speak for an hour, and finish up. For me, a lesson is a constant two-way exchange, where, at every step, the student and I work together to confirm their understanding of a topic, address any questions they might have, and ensure that they finish a session secure in their new knowledge.
My lessons are designed to take a student through a structured series of tasks, balancing the teaching of new information and checking understanding. Each lesson will begin with a stated goal that we will hope to have reached by the lesson's end. I'll use handouts and worksheets along the way, but we'll always work our way through them together. I try and ensure my lesson environment is a friendly, informal one with plenty of positive reinforcement, in which the student always feels comfortable asking questions and offering answers.
