About Aoife

I am an experienced and passionate English teacher with a cumulative 5 years of experience teaching EFL with students from a range of ages, backgrounds, abilities, and native languages.

I am CELTA certified and have a high-energy, student centered teaching style as well as experience in teaching online classes, conversational English, business English and IELTS exam preparation. I am comfortable working with assigned textbooks as well as creating my own materials that are more closely aligned with my students' needs and interests.

I am a graduate from the University of Melbourne, where I studied a bachelor's degree in Media and Communication and a concurrent diploma in Spanish and Latin American Studies. I thus have a deep understanding of how to best utilise the English language in a multitude of contexts, ranging from interpersonal and group communication, academic language, media writing (social media, PR, print journalism and screenwriting) as well as from a business/marketing perspective.

About the lesson

I endeavor to create a relaxed and fun learning atmosphere where my students feel comfortable to express themselves, make mistakes, and learn how to fix them. I believe that in most classes the students should be talking more than their teacher (especially once they reach an intermediate level). I encourage self-correction and honest self-evaluation.

The structure of my classes differs depending on the student's needs and learning goals. For example, if a student wants to improve their general conversational English, the class will typically be more relaxed and fluid, while if a student's goal is test-preparation or to master a specific grammatical structure, the class will be more focussed and comprised of number of activities designed to meet the student's specific needs.

A common theme for all my classes is the use of videos, songs and current news and events in English to spark conversation or model new vocabulary and grammar. I always leave around 15 minutes at the end of the class to review new vocabulary and correct any mistakes in pronunciation, vocabulary or grammar that have sprung up during the class.

Cancellations with more than 24 hours notice can be rescheduled with no additional cost. If you have to cancel a lesson with less than 24 hours notice, you must pay for that lesson and purchase an additional class if you wish to replace it.
