About Shyam

My name is Shyam Jayabal, and I am currently an undergraduate studying Economics, Finance and Data Science at Imperial College London. I have always enjoyed subjects that challenge the way I think, particularly mathematics and analytical problem-solving, which is reflected in my academic background and achievements. Alongside my studies, I have spent over half a decade tutoring students from 11+ through to A-Level, working both one-to-one and in small groups. These experiences, combined with opportunities such as competing in national academic competitions and mentoring younger students, have helped shape my communication skills and reinforced my enjoyment of working closely with learners at different stages of their academic journey.

My passion for teaching and tutoring comes from seeing the impact that patient, personalised support can have on a student’s confidence as well as their results. One experience that has stayed with me was tutoring a student who felt overwhelmed by mathematics and was reluctant to even attempt challenging questions. By focusing on building their confidence, breaking problems into manageable steps, and creating a safe space to make mistakes, I watched their attitude gradually change. Their grades improved, but more importantly, they became more self-assured and willing to challenge themselves — not just in maths, but in school more broadly. Moments like this are what motivate me to continue tutoring: helping students realise their own potential and develop a positive relationship with learning that extends far beyond exams.

About the lesson

I have over 5 years of tutoring experience, delivering both 1-to-1 and group sessions across a wide academic range, both in-person and online. I have supported students preparing for 11+ entrance exams, GCSEs, and A-Levels, with a particular focus on Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Economics.

My sessions are typically 1 hour long, with frequency depending on students' choice (maximum of up to 3 times a week), as well as crash courses or one-off longer sessions before significant events, such as exams.

My approach to tutoring is highly tailored: I assess each student’s strengths, gaps, and learning style before designing structured lesson plans that prioritise exam technique, problem-solving, and confidence building. Through these techniques, coupled with my vast experience in tutoring, I have helped students strengthen core fundamentals while also developing the analytical thinking required for higher-level questions.
