About Serena
Hi! My name is Serena, and I am a current sophomore at Bowdoin College, pursuing a double major in English and Government & Legal Studies. I attended St. Paul’s School, a boarding high school in Concord, New Hampshire, where I graduated with first testimonials (honors), awards, and distinctions in Humanities and Dance. At Bowdoin, I was offered a position as a staff writer for the college newspaper’s Arts & Entertainment column during my first year. I have engaged in editorial work since high school, serving as a peer editor for both friends and younger students. Over the years, I have gained professional tutoring experience with high school students, which has taught me how to create lesson plans tailored to individual needs. This summer, I worked extensively in one-on-one sessions with students preparing to attend boarding or private schools. Our sessions focused on analyzing and annotating summer readings, strengthening essay-writing skills, and engaging in guided discussions to ensure a smoother academic transition. I am also very familiar with the Common App, supplemental essays, and the college application process, having completed it myself not long ago. In addition to Bowdoin, I was offered admission to other prestigious institutions, including Emory, Colgate, and Colby. I teach one-on-one sessions, as I believe this format is the most effective for achieving each student’s personal goals—whether perfecting a personal statement or improving academic writing. Regardless of the objective, I approach every session with patience, dedication, and enthusiasm.

My student-centered method blends rigorous academic training with personalized support. Depending on the student's specific needs and goals, I tailor the lesson plans to help them achieve those goals. This summer, I worked extensively in one-on-one sessions with students preparing to attend boarding or private schools. Our sessions focused on analyzing and annotating summer readings, strengthening essay-writing skills, and engaging in guided discussions to ensure a smoother academic transition.
Typically, I start the session by checking in with my students about what they find interesting in the assigned homework chapters of the book. Then, I usually ask them to share those passages that they found interesting, making sure also to ask them how they annotated those passages and how those passages connect to an overarching theme in the book. After a guided discussion that encourages deeper thinking and analysis, I go over any written work they have completed from their previous class assignment that they have sent to me before the class begins. I go over any corrections, edits, or feedback I have for them. When I engage in editorial work on a student’s essay, I make sure that although I am correcting, I do not change their unique and authentic voice. Even though I do send a digital copy of their essay with the added edits, I make sure to go over every change that is made together with the student during class, so that I am able to explain how to correct a grammatical error or how to better phrase a sentence.
Of course, this is just one example of what I have done for a student, and modifications are to be made to tailor the lesson plan to the student's needs and goals. I can work with students from middle school to high school seniors applying for colleges.
