About Poppy

Hi there!

I am a 5th year biology student at the University of York. Neuroscience and the crossover between my subject and psychology greatly fascinates me, the brain is a mysterious organ with so much left to explore. Biology in general has taken me to incredible places, from the depths of the microscopic world to the beautiful plains of Tanzania.

I have been able to help people better understand the sciences throughout my academic career. For example, running my school’s science club, mentoring 1st year biology students and being involved in multiple pollinator awareness events held at Kew Gardens and Carnaby Street as part of Reading Bee Team. Tutoring is the next step in doing this and I really hope to share my enthusiasm with you.

I am aware that the education system seems to be ever changing but I would love to support students through this, keeping up to date with their syllabus and ideal exam technique for their exam board. Course work and exams have featured heavily in my studies from GCSE to degree level allowing me to share how I have better tackled them over time.

About the lesson

I tutor primerily KS2 and KS3 students as have most experience in this (2 years). My experience has included school group sessions, one-to-one tutoring alongside schooling and also homeschooling the full KS2 maths syllabus. I am DBS checked.

The tutoring sessions will begin with going over the previous session and set work. We will then revise/learn a chosen topic, in line with the syllabus, using discussed learningtechniques which we will also build along the way. This will be followed by a short quiz to help solidify the information just reviewed. Next, we will break down to fish out the functional words and craft answers together to strengthen exam technique. I will then give the student some further homework questions to consolidate what was learnt in the session.

After every tutorial, I will provide a review including what went well, what has improved and what could be better. This will be very helpful in measuring progress and providing much needed encouragement! I know not everybody is captivated by the sciences, but I will work hard to find methods which engage the individual student and am always open to suggestions for improving my tutorials. I can also be available if students have any questions or would like some last-minute support for an exam.

I am very flexible with lesson lengths and open to disvussion withstudents and parents!
