About Julianne
Hi, I'm Julianne! I'm currently a graduate student at UQ, studying for my Master of Conservation Science. I hope to one day become a university professor, or some other form of science educator. My main focus is on birds, specifically on language and song learning in birds. I was born and raised in the United States, and received my Bachelor's of Science in Zoology from SUNY Oswego in upstate New York. During that degree, I conducted research on Canada Geese, participated in bird banding projects, and worked as a community outreach intern at my school's field station, in which I ran biology education programs for the community. I also studied abroad in South Africa, during which I partook in field research on invasive species, ephemeral pools, and fire ecology.

Along with studying for my Master's degree, I have four years of experience as a science educator at various nature-based and zoo camps. I specialize in the biological sciences, including ecology, anatomy and biochemistry, with a focus on zoology.
My teaching methods are based on a Method of Reflective Equilibrium approach, where I work with students to narrow in on and question a concept until we determine blind spots. Once those are determined, I tailor lessons to each individual student to recontextualize the material or develop mnemonic techniques to aid in learning. I also put a large focus on using recent biological research as a way of expressing concepts to students and showing the real-world applications of their lessons.
I have the most experience with students ages 8-14, but am comfortable with teaching students of all ages. Having ADHD myself, I am also familiar working with students with ADHD.
