About Dr Freddie

I am a former editor and business journalist with many years of professional experience who recently completed a PhD in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter. While at Exeter, for three years I taught first and second-year undergraduates across a broad range of academic subjects covering Classical literature, ancient history, and material culture and civilisation, resulting in almost 300 hours of teaching and marking experience. In addition to Classics, I am also a near-native Spanish speaker (my family are from Spain originally). I have a deep passion for all the subjects that I am offering to teach. I am currently teaching some 20 students as a personal tutor, either one-on-one or in small groups, from beginners’ to post-university level.

I am above all a thoughtful teacher, emphasising kindness and respect above all other qualities, who will work hard to make sure I can help my students as much as possible. I also have undertaken extensive formal teacher training through a University of Exeter official programme and am now an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. For the fellowship, I was asked to explore the depth and breadth of my teaching practice and experience, focusing on core values, knowledge, and areas of activity, and had to provide a formal written account of all aspects of my teaching in a document that ran to 27 pages. The process included a detailed written peer review of my own teaching by a senior member of the Classics and Ancient History Department at the University of Exeter. In her written assessment, my reviewer said, “There wasn’t a single moment in which [the students] weren’t completely focused on the task at hand… It’s a clear marker of how comfortable they felt that almost every student participated in the discussion. You took great care to give the students space, holding back at certain points to avoid disrupting their flow, which was really nice to see.”

I am a near-native Spanish speaker due to my Spanish background and heritage. I would be more than happy to tutor anyone of whatever ability who wants to improve their modern language skills, formally up to A-level or informally (for instance via conversation classes ahead of a vacation). I have extensive undergraduate level teaching experience at the University of Exeter where I recently completed a PhD in Classics and Ancient History. My expert knowledge of Latin has provided me with an understanding of how languages such as Spanish work and I can provide this expertise to my students. I normally worked with small groups of between 5-10 students which gave me the opportunity to understand each of my students’ learning strengths and challenges, tailoring my classes to their requirements. I also undertook extensive formal assessment of essays and commentaries for the department, offering students detailed feedback on the quality of their work. Lessons will be an hour in length. The first lesson will be used to learn more about the student, what they hope to gain from the lessons, how I can help them, as well as determining the type of material that I will then cover so that I can tailor subsequent lessons to the student’s needs and requirements. This could be centred on specific subject areas or topics required for the student to pass a formal exam, whether GCSE, A-level or undergraduate, or it could be something more general for those students who want to learn about the subject in an informal way. Any students who are taught by me will automatically be given expert advice on how to structure and compose their written work, based on my many years of experience in this field. My experience as an editor and journalist has provided me with a unique insight into what makes a good piece of writing and so I have also tutored undergraduate students, both in small groups and on a one-on-one basis, in how to structure their academic essays and improve their writing skills more generally.
