About David
My name is David, and I am a native English speaker and UC Berkeley graduate with a deep passion for language, communication, and helping others find their voice in English. I am bilingual in English and Korean, which gives me a perspective that most English tutors cannot offer — I understand not only how to use the language fluently, but also what it genuinely feels like to learn one. That experience makes me a more patient, perceptive, and effective teacher for non-native learners at any stage. Over seven years as a software professional, I have relied on clear, precise written and verbal communication every single day — drafting technical documentation, collaborating across teams, and presenting complex ideas to diverse audiences. English is not just a subject I teach; it is a skill I actively use and refine in my career. I am also an Eagle Scout, and the values that distinction represents — diligence, reliability, and care for others — are ones I bring to every tutoring session. Whether your child needs help with reading comprehension, essay writing, grammar, or building everyday conversational confidence, I am here to provide structured, encouraging, and professional support. I offer lessons both online and in person in the Greater Boston area. You are welcome to verify my background on LinkedIn at (concealed information)

My approach to English tutoring covers the full range of the subject: reading comprehension, essay and creative writing, grammar, vocabulary, and conversation. Whether a student is a native English speaker working to sharpen their writing, or a non-native learner building confidence in everyday communication, my lessons are tailored to where they are and where they want to go.
As a bilingual speaker of English and Korean, I have a perspective most native English tutors cannot offer. I know what it feels like to navigate a language from the outside, which means I can anticipate where ESL students struggle, explain concepts across language barriers, and create a learning environment where no question feels embarrassing.
A typical 60-minute lesson follows a clear structure. We open with a short warm-up — a conversation, a vocabulary exercise, or a quick grammar check — before moving into the session's main focus, whether that is a grammar concept, a reading strategy, essay structure, or vocabulary building. We then practice together with real-time feedback, followed by a period of independent work that allows me to assess where the student truly stands. Every session closes with a brief recap, a short take-home exercise, and a preview of what is coming next.
What sets me apart: my UC Berkeley education demanded a consistently high standard of written communication, and over 7 years of professional work I have applied those skills in real-world technical and business writing. I am a native speaker who has also experienced language learning firsthand, which gives me the ability to teach English both naturally and empathetically. Lessons are available online via video call or in person in the Greater Boston area.
These lessons are designed for students in grades 3 through 12 — native English speakers who want to improve their reading and writing, ESL learners at any stage of fluency, and students preparing for standardized tests such as the SAT or TOEFL.
