About Robert

My name is Robert, and I want you to feel confident that you're working with someone who takes both math and teaching seriously.

I hold a master's degree in Behavioral Finance from Arizona State University and an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. Beyond academics, I bring nearly a decade of professional experience in analytical, detail-driven fields, including financial compliance and risk analysis, where precision, clear communication, and problem-solving are part of the job every single day. I'm also a U.S. Navy veteran, which instilled the discipline and reliability I bring to every lesson — students and parents can count on me to show up prepared, on time, and fully invested in their progress.

I understand that inviting a tutor into your academic life (or your child's) requires trust. That's why I approach every lesson with patience, clarity, and professionalism. I don't just want students to get through their homework — I want them to genuinely understand the material, build real confidence, and see math as something they can master, not something to fear.

Whether you're catching up, staying ahead, or simply trying to build a stronger foundation, I'm here to make sure your time is well spent and your progress is real.

My teaching method and approach

I believe math is easiest to learn when it's connected to real reasoning rather than memorized steps. My background is a bit unconventional for a math tutor — I hold a master's degree in Behavioral Finance from Arizona State University and an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. That combination shapes how I teach: I use computational thinking (breaking problems into logical steps, recognizing patterns, and building solutions systematically) alongside financial and statistical reasoning to show students why math works, not just how to get an answer.

I start every new student relationship with a short diagnostic conversation — not a test, just a discussion — to understand where their foundation is solid, where the gaps are, and what's causing frustration or confidence issues. From there, I build a personalized plan rather than following a generic curriculum.

A typical lesson

First 5–10 minutes: Quick review of the previous topic and any homework or practice problems, addressing questions before moving forward.
Core lesson (25–30 minutes): New concept introduced with a real-world or applied example (financial modeling, coding logic, or data-driven scenarios when relevant) before moving into structured practice.
Guided practice (10–15 minutes): Student works through problems with my support, so I can catch misunderstandings in real time rather than after the fact.
Wrap-up (5 minutes): Summary of what was covered, a preview of the next session, and a short set of practice problems tailored to reinforce the specific skill worked on.

I adjust this structure based on the student's age, learning pace, and whether we're building toward a test, a class, or general mastery.

What sets me apart

Most math tutors come from either a pure math/education background or a general tutoring background. I bring a dual lens: the analytical, systems-based thinking of computer science, and the applied, decision-focused thinking of behavioral finance. This means I'm especially effective at helping students see where math shows up in the real world — whether that's algebra, statistics, or early calculus — which tends to build motivation, not just competence.

Who my lessons are for

I work with students from middle school through high school, as well as college-level learners needing support in algebra, geometry, statistics, or introductory finance/quantitative reasoning courses. I'm especially well-suited for:

Students who feel "behind" and need confidence rebuilt alongside skills
Students preparing for standardized tests or specific coursework
Learners interested in how math connects to finance, economics, or computer science
Adult learners returning to coursework (including those pursuing degrees later in life)
