About Ben

I am in my fourth year of part-time teaching at the prestigious Bedford Girls' School. Prior to that my experience with young people has included: working as a housemaster in a top Irish private school, teaching refugee children in the West Bank; two years working at Young Arbury Music Makers teaching guitar and singing; private tuition of bass guitar, drums, piano and music theory; volunteer work on summer camps for children aged 2-18; and chaperoning choristers while on tour with Jesus College Choir, Cambridge. As well as my main calling (music) I teach Maths, Physics, English and all aspects of the eleven plus exams. I discovered my passion for music aged 16 when someone handed me a bass guitar and told me to keep up with the drummer. Since then I have performed in and directed rock bands, big bands, jazz bands, worship bands and musical theatre bands. I supported the Temptations live, featured on the backing track for the 2009 OUP publication Jamaican Voiceworks, and led a congregation of over a thousand from the back of a lorry. At the age of twenty I discovered my counter tenor voice, and went on to gain choral scholarships at St Luke’s Church Chelsea, Christchurch Cathedral Dublin, Norwich Cathedral and Jesus College Cambridge. I deputised at King’s College Cambridge and New College Oxford, was a member of the Cambridge University Chamber Choir, and starred in several CU operas. I was Music Officer at St Edmund’s College Cambridge, and then President of the college's Music Society.
