About Joanna
Hey kids,
I was told by my former class of students that they would miss me so much when I had to move to Hawaii with my husband. I think that tells something about me. I am part of Gen Y, a couple of generations before yours. I grew up seeing technology evolved from Dial 1515 to your 5G connection today. Do you know what a Floppy Disc is?
My name is Joanna. I am a half-Banana (A Chinese whose Mandarin skills are subpar). I graduated in 2016 with a degree in English Language and Communication. In that degree, I've learned how to design a syllabus and how to psychologically teach you, it's called Education Psychology.
English has been my first language because I come from a cross-cultural family. My mom is a Chinese (also a half-Banana) and my dad is a Burmese. I'm married to a white guy and you know they ONLY know English.

Being educated in the Malaysian public school system from standard 1 to form 6, and being exposed to homeschooling and other educational methods in other parts of the world, I believe that intrinsic motivation + discipline = significant progress.
I work best with tweens and teenagers, ages 12-19. My typical one-on-one lesson is an hour to 1.5 hours long depending on the student's level and goal.
My tutoring experience started at the age of 16 where I tutored my juniors who were sitting for PMR (Ah, the old days...). I've also taught in a refugee school during my gap year. And I've taught children in church settings as well (Yes, I'm a Christian).
If your sole aim is to get an A in your English exam, I can help you with that and hopefully sprinkle some fun into that process. But if you have bigger dreams or a vision beyond your exams, let's discuss and explore what are some steps we can take together to make that a reality.
