Time: 45 minutes
Materials:

- Highlighters and/or crayons
- Digital whiteboard
- Main idea and details graphic organizer
1. Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Activity: “What’s the Big Idea?”
Ask the student to describe the main idea of a short story they know (e.g. The Three Little Pigs).
Purpose: Activates prior knowledge and sets the tone.
2. Guided Reading (15 minutes)
Activity: Read a short fiction passage together (e.g., “Ben’s Big Game”).
Tip: Pause to ask comprehension questions:
What’s happening here?
How does Ben feel?
What changed from the beginning to now?
3. Main Idea Mini-Lesson (10 minutes)
Teach: What is a main idea? What are details? Use a visual organizer (like an umbrella or hamburger).
Interactive: Highlight the main idea in yellow, and 2–3 details in pink as you go back through the story.
4. Practice Together (10 minutes)
Activity: Fill out the Main Idea graphic organizer together.
Prompt:
Main Idea: What is this story mostly about?
Detail 1: What’s one important thing that happened?
Detail 2: What’s another thing that supports the main idea?
5. Wrap-Up & Reflect (5 minutes)
Discussion:
What did we learn today?
How can finding the main idea help us?
Celebrate: Give a sticker or a digital badge for effort or accuracy.
