About Gillian

I am a qualified teacher and looking to build my skillset and help students around the world become confident in their skills and build strength in Math, English and French. I enjoy learning about new educational approaches as well as reading literature. I am outdoorsy and my toddler and I enjoy spending lots of time exploring our little forest behind our home.

About the lesson

In my classroom, I prioritize creating an inclusive environment where all students can thrive. I teach a diverse set of subjects, including English (focusing on grammar, the science of reading, and phonetics), French grammar, reading, writing, and math to Grade 6 students. Through carefully planned lessons and strategies, I aim to support every student, regardless of their learning needs or language backgrounds, ensuring they feel valued and capable of success.

In English, I apply the principles of the science of reading to help students understand the systematic connection between letters and sounds, promoting phonetic awareness and decoding skills. To make these concepts accessible, I incorporate visual aids, hands-on activities, and various reading materials to engage students at different levels. I also ensure that grammar lessons are interactive, allowing for collaborative exercises that reinforce learning in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

For French grammar and language arts, I scaffold the lessons by introducing foundational concepts and then building upon them progressively. I use differentiated instruction, offering tasks at various levels of difficulty to cater to the diverse needs of my students. This approach helps learners who may be new to the language, as well as those who are more advanced, to find success in their own way.

In math, I employ a range of strategies, such as manipulatives and visual aids, to help make abstract concepts more concrete. Additionally, I provide opportunities for collaborative learning, encouraging peer support to ensure that all students feel confident in their abilities. I offer flexible groupings and allow for alternative ways of solving problems, ensuring that no one is left behind.
