About Sharon
Background
I am a London-based researcher and academic. Reading and reviewing academic papers is part of my day job, which means I have a current, working knowledge of what strong academic writing looks like right now, what is being published, what reviewers and examiners respond to, and where academic conversations are heading. I understand what it means for a piece of work to make a genuine contribution to its field and how to position findings so they connect to real academic and real-world trends. My own work has been recognised with an award and published for its rigour, clarity, originality and depth.
What I help with
I work with students on the things that actually determine a mark: a focused research question, a clear and sustained argument, critical engagement with literature, methodological justification, and a structure that holds together from start to finish. I also help students think about what new knowledge their work is adding and whether it connects meaningfully to current thinking in the field. The students I have worked with have gone on to achieve consistent A's and high distinctions at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. My academic writing has been awarded and published. I tutor because I genuinely love helping students find the same level of confidence in their own work and learn how to think and write at the highest level required by their degree.
I work well with students who feel stuck, overwhelmed, anxious about writing, or unsure how to turn their ideas into a strong academic argument. I also have experience working with neurodivergent students, including those with ADHD, autism and dyslexia, and I adapt my approach to different working and processing styles.

My lessons are structured, evidence-based and tailored to the way each student thinks. A typical session begins with the student's own work, brief, feedback or dissertation idea. We identify what needs strengthening and work through it carefully. This might involve the research question, structure, argument, evidence, literature review, methodology, critical analysis, academic tone, referencing or editing strategy. Students usually leave with a clearer direction, a stronger plan and practical next steps.
My teaching draws on a range of academic writing and learning methods:
✦ Use deep questioning to help students stop relying on templates and start owning their own unique arguments to create original dissertations.
✦ Use a "phased" structure to break a massive, intimidating dissertation into manageable, winning milestones.
✦ Equipping students with advanced analytical lenses to transcend descriptive reporting in favour of high-level synthesis and original conceptual contribution.
✦ Establishing a "golden thread" by visually and structurally aligning claims, evidence, and theoretical interpretation.
✦ Providing feedback that explains the underlying principles of academic excellence, enabling students to self-correct and grow.
✦ Replacing the "overwhelm" of a major project with a professional research roadmap that ensures momentum.
✦ Developing a precise and confident prose style that prioritises the student’s own intellectual agency.
✦ Inclusive teaching methods for students with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, anxiety or different processing styles.
I also use a 6 Principles of Excellence framework to assess and strengthen academic work. This framework focuses on the qualities that genuinely separate good work from outstanding work: originality, which means challenging a widely accepted view or filling a specific research gap; methodological rigour, which means providing a deep justification for chosen research methods over alternatives; theoretical engagement, which means showing a deeply engaged understanding of relevant paradigms; cohesion, which means every chapter logically builds on the previous one; clarity, which means the argument is easy to follow at every level; and presentation, which means superior formatting, clear tables and zero grammatical errors.
My style is calm, direct and supportive. I give honest feedback while making the work feel manageable.
Sessions are usually 60 minutes. For dissertation planning, chapter feedback, methodology support or deadline preparation, 90-minute sessions are often more effective.
