About Richard

I grew up in a small coastal town in Ayrshire, Scotland, and developed a keen interest in architecture from a young age. I went on to study Architecture at the University of Dundee, where I eventually gained my Part I and Part II accreditation first, with a 1st Class Honours degree, then a Master’s Degree with Distinction. I then moved to Suffolk, England, where I now live with my lovely wife, two dogs, and cat. We are excited to soon add a wee baby to that family dynamic.

As a student at university, I won design competitions and the final year student prize for architectural representation. My design project was also featured in the Architect’s Journal and commended for its use of light, shape and shade, and for its level of consideration and technical resolution. It was also at university that I developed a strong interest in theory and writing, where I consistently gained high marks for my architectural writing. Subsequently, I have continued to write as a personal hobby and have been successful in various international writing competitions. My writing was recently shortlisted for the ‘Buildner’ ‘What is Sustainable Architecture?’ essay writing competition. Recently, I was accepted into the University of Cambridge to complete my Part III accreditation, where hopefully, I will be a fully accredited Part III architect by September 2023.

Since leaving university, I have been working for Hoare, Ridge & Morris Architects in Suffolk, working on predominantly traditional, historic and listed buildings, with a focus on restoration, renovation and extension of these buildings. The work is primarily residential country houses, but with some smaller scale commercial jobs. It is in the nature of HRMA to produce highly detailed construction drawings and workshop details, with a particular focus on traditional door, window and internal joinery. The practice also places a large emphasis on the use of traditional and sustainable construction materials, which has positively shaped the way I design and work as an architecture.

Outside of architecture, I enjoy learning about history, linguistics, archaeology and psychology. I try to dedicate as much of my time to reading as possible. I also enjoy sport, and am currently training towards running a marathon. Furthermore, I am an avid outdoorsman - I enjoy hiking, camping and general fiend craft. I am also a proud British Army Reservist in the RLC, having recently passed my Basic Training.

Architecture is a long and challenging degree, with a diverse and complex range of knowledge that demands familiarisation. For many, this may be a daunting prospect, but I am eager to help throughout this process. I am passionate about architecture and enjoy sharing that passion with others, which is why I love to teach. Each new student with me will start by arranging a free initial call where we can discuss your needs and expectations. After this, we can talk through what I can offer you and develop a programme to move forward with.

GETTING STARTED
Taking the first step in any career path is undoubtedly the hardest part - knowing where to start is always a challenge. Free of charge, I offer insight into what life as an architect looks like, as a chance to help you decide if architecture is right for you. I also advise on what steps you can take towards becoming an architect, and talk you through the various routes available to reach accreditation.

PORTFOLIO / APPLICATION / CV & JOBSEEKING REVIEW
These sessions are split into two phases. First, an initial presentation of your work in its first draft state, followed by a feedback period delivered via constructive criticism, aimed at guiding you towards improvement of your presentation skills, both verbal and visual, facilitating you in standing out from the crowd. This feedback is supported by my personal experience and understanding of the kind of thinking that both universities and employers like to see in the work on display.

TECHNICAL & CONCEPTPUAL DESIGN
My experience working with historic and listed buildings in sensitive settings has afforded me a unique approach to design, heavily detail oriented, often designing bespoke elements of buildings, particularly traditional door and window joinery. I also regularly work with traditional and sustainable building materials. I have experience working on landscape design, many residential projects across a range of traditional styles, and regularly I have worked on the interior design of the projects that we are involved in. I can review and advise on university design projects and assist in their technical design and construction detailing. Areas I can offer advice and/or lessons on:

- The design elements and principles.
- The Classical elements and orders of Architecture, and their implementation.
- Traditional joinery - doors, windows, and cabinetry.
- The principles of construction, construction detailing and building materials.
- Architectural brickwork.
- Sustainable building techniques.
- Masterplanning.

ESSAY WRITING, THEORY & HISTORY
The written word has repeatedly revolutionised the architectural profession, and is a crucial aspect of processing, developing, testing and conveying architectural ideas. Despite this, writing is an underappreciated and, frankly, a poorly taught aspect of modern architectural education. I have performed well in writing throughout university and gained a Master’s degree with distinction for my final year thesis. I have also had success in various international writing competitions since graduation. I offer advice on how to research and gather resources for your essay, how to professionally structure a piece of writing, how to correctly reference your sources, and I proofread for the purpose of improving grammar, vocabulary and readability. Further to this, I can teach both architectural history and the theory of architecture, and help develop your knowledge on these subjects for your essay and exam questions.

I have a wide-ranging interest in architectural history and theory, and have written much about the history and theories of both modernism and post-modernism, but also the architecture and theory of antiquity, classicism and, to a lesser extent, the architecture of the renaissance. I typically advocate for an interdisciplinary approach to design theory, and I can help contextualise your architectural thinking within a wider academic framework.

I look forward to hearing from any potential student!
