About Jessica

My credentials as an award-winning Investigative Reporter for the BBC help to inform my teaching. I have been a correspondent in two BBC One documentaries to date (the second is out later this year), won a CIRCOM award for Europe’s Best News Report 2026, am BJTC accredited, and have worked for the BBC full time since 2018. I am BJTC accredited, have a MA degree from City University in Television Journalism, and broke into the television industry having zero contacts. I am a big advocate of work experience and am passionate about being the industry contact for aspiring journalists I wish I had growing up.

About the lesson

Because I am actively working in the industry, I can offer students current, practical insight into the realities of modern journalism, in addition to teaching theory and connecting academic concepts with the realities of journalism in practice. My teaching is informed by first-hand experience of working to professional journalistic standards, tight deadlines, and rigorous editorial and legal requirements. I use examples from my own professional experience to make lessons engaging and relevant, whilst helping students develop the curiosity, critical thinking, resilience and attention to detail that are essential for succeeding in multiplatform journalism of today.

My lessons are highly interactive and tailored to the student's goals and experience. I combine short explanations of key principles with practical exercises, including developing story ideas, research and fact-checking, interviewing, investigative techniques, pitching, writing for broadcast, digital and online platforms, and structuring compelling stories. I use real examples to demonstrate how stories are first researched, then investigated and ultimately reported on. I also provide detailed feedback on students' work, helping them understand what could be improved, and encouraging them to develop their own journalistic voice in the process.

I teach aspiring and developing journalists, from older teenagers and university students through to adults looking to enter or progress within the industry. I can work with beginners who want to understand the fundamentals of journalism, as well as more experienced students preparing university applications, completing journalism courses and portfolios. Lessons can be adapted to the student's particular interests, whether that be investigative journalism, TV reporting, interviewing, research, story development or writing for broadcast.

My lessons are typically 60 minutes, although I can offer longer sessions where appropriate, and these can be in person or virtual.
