About Sophia
I'm a passionate and experienced tutor with a BA in Art History and English & Comparative Literature from Columbia University and an MA in Art History and Curatorial Studies from the University of Chicago. I have extensive experience tutoring high school, undergraduate, and pre-college students, with a focus on the humanities—including art history, English literature, philosophy, and history. I’ve taught undergraduate courses at UChicago and worked in curatorial and research roles at world-class institutions such as the Whitney Museum, MoMA, and the Smart Museum of Art. My teaching style is thoughtful, supportive, and tailored to each student’s goals. I help students strengthen their writing, sharpen their analytical thinking, and approach complex material with clarity and confidence. Fluent in French, German, and Italian, I bring an inclusive and globally informed perspective to every session. As a tutor, I take a student-centered, discussion-driven approach that emphasizes clarity, confidence, and critical thinking. My lessons are tailored to each learner’s goals—whether that’s mastering academic content, developing strong analytical writing, or preparing for college applications. I specialize in the humanities, with expertise in art history, English and comparative literature, philosophy, and history, and I’m passionate about helping students make meaningful connections across disciplines.
My teaching method combines close reading, structured writing support, and step-by-step analysis of complex texts or ideas. I use real examples—from essays, artworks, or coursework—to ground abstract concepts and help students apply them effectively. A typical session begins with a short check-in, followed by guided instruction on a focus area such as essay structure, reading comprehension, or research strategy. Each lesson ends with a recap and an action plan to ensure steady progress.
What sets me apart is my academic background—an MA in Art History from the University of Chicago and a BA from Columbia University—as well as my teaching and curatorial experience at institutions like MoMA, the Whitney, and the Smart Museum. I’ve taught undergraduate courses at the University of Chicago, leading discussion sections, grading assignments, and mentoring students through long-form research and writing. I also bring fluency in French, German, and Italian, and an inclusive, global perspective to everything I teach. I’ve worked with high school, undergraduate, and pre-college students, and I especially enjoy supporting students with college essays, humanities coursework, and academic writing at any level.
