About Barney

I am an easy going and friendly person who's passionate about my subjects. I have been lucky enough to have always had both a keen interest in, and a strong understanding of, my studies. However, I have always found the greatest reward in helping others understand maths and science in the way that I do. I have always wanted to be a teacher and so I really enjoy tutoring, and I'm always looking for ways in which I could improve my teaching skills.

About the lesson

I`m 19 and currently studying maths at Durham University. I achieved 11 A*s at GCSE and 4 A*s at A level in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Furthermore, I achieved 100% in Maths A level and close to 100% in Further Maths A level.

Having taken my GCSE and A level exams in the last few years, I still have a very detailed understanding of exactly what you need to know for the exams. From knowing the best methods and techniques, to finding the ways most suitable for you to remember the subject material, I can aid you in learning and understanding the material for every exam.

Over the last few years, I have worked with a diverse range of students, from age 8 to 18. I`ve helped my students increase their test scores by over 50%. I've also helped others move up sets and I`ve taught my revision skill set to those who I have tutored that had little to no knowledge in great revision techniques. In 2020, I took a gap year and tutored maths for 10-15 hours per week, helping many of my students achieve A* grades at GCSE and A level, in what was a very challenging year due to Covid-19.

I have learned through my experience that each student is different. Every individual learns in a different way, and everyone needs slightly different explanations to fully understand. My strongest attribute is my ability to adapt to each student`s needs. I have a clear understanding of every topic which allows me to come up with a multitude of different ways of explaining each concept. If you don`t understand an idea or method, I will explain it from every possible angle until we find a way for you to understand to the material.

Being enthusiastic and in a similar age group as my students has truly helped me connect with my students yet also develop a strong understanding on how frustrating exams or misunderstanding material can be. By going through a similar journey as most of my students, I believe it is easier for me to understand their difficulties and concerns, and knowing just the way to solve them!
