About Jonathan

Hi! My name is Jonathan and I have been teaching math for over 10 years in the Austin area. Currently I have been teaching at one of the top private schools in the city. I love being at school and helping students learn math through engaging and fun lessons! I speak English and Spanish fluently so I am also able to teach math in Spanish! In my spare time, you'll find me playing tennis, listening to music, playing guitar, and walking our Boston Terrier around town. About the lesson

As an Algebra 1 teacher and tutor, my first step is to talk and get to know my students. Building rapport is extremely important when working with struggling students because they don't just need a person to help them learn, but they need a person who they feel has got their backs. When there is trust, students are consistently more likely to succeed at learning math or any other topic they might be struggling with. I strongly believe that the best way each student learns is highly specific to that person. For this reason, I adapt my teaching method/style in accordance with my students' needs. For example, if a student struggles with short-term memory, I will use tricks to help them better remember information. Tricks such as tunes, acronyms, games, etc. In order to figure out the best methods to use with students, I observe how the student learns best and ask myself the following questions: do they have photographic memory? Do they struggle with abstract reasoning? Do they struggle with memory? Do they struggle with executive functioning skills?
