About Joel

I currently work as a Senior Big Data & Software Engineer with a top consulting firm in the UK. I possess an MSc. in Advanced Computer Science with a concentration in Artificial Intelligence and a BSc degree in Computer Engineering. I have relevant work experience in the software engineering industry and one year as a teaching assistant for Computer Engineering at the undergraduate level.

About the lesson

My target students are university and pre-university students. Also, you don't need to be a STEM student to receive my lessons. A decent high school level maths base is however necessary. My approach to teaching programming is practical (learning by doing); we move through the syntax by doing, and afterwards execute a basic project to tie it all together.

Perfect! Well planned lesson at the perfect pace.

Joel knowing both Python and Javascript was beneficial as he could relate the language I'm learning to the one I am already familiar with.

He adapted the pace nicely to match my level, not dwelling on what I already knew but not moving so fast that I missed or failed to understand anything either. Good use of screen share.

Would recommend.

Tutoring Ben was very fluid given he already has some programming experience. He easily catches on; even with somewhat newer concepts.

Having had the opportunity to be coached by Joel on numerous occasions, he made me push the obstacles I faced during my lab sessions which involved programming in Python. Having said that, what makes Joel stand out is that his solution will not be just to remove the obstacle, rather explaining the scenario of my approach in programming, which in turn made me realize where exactly I went wrong and what measures I need to take to overcome the obstacle. I strongly believe that Joel tutoring anyone will make the person confidently engage in challenging programming situations just as the way I am now.
