About Gem
I've been acting on the stage for over 21 years and have extensive experience in all aspects of theatre (tech, performance, production, etc). My favorite subjects to teach are Acting/Understanding Shakespeare and the Michael Chekhov Technique. While studying for my Bachelors in Theatre, I received 4 years of studio training in the Chekhov Technique, which included pedagogy instruction on directing actors in performances using Chekhovian exercises. I currently teach Acting the Song to middle schoolers and direct a high school level Technical Theatre internship program at an after-school academy.

Chekhov believed that characters are individuals separate from ourselves and we must take the necessary steps to become the character and experience the effects of their actions, both past and present, through the means of our imagination. Whether you are training specifically in the Chekhovian Technique or you are generally learning how to act, the exercises used in this technique are effective ways to learn how to separate yourself from the characters you play and gather character emotions without having to delve into your own personal vault of feelings. No more picturing your dog or loved ones dying in order to cry on stage! I can walk you through imagination and atmospheric exercises where we explore who your character is, what they've experienced, and connect your embodiment of them to the text in order to conjure true emotions. This theatrical technique has proven to be effective for both professionals and beginners of all ages, in fact my middle schoolers love embodying characters and walking through imaginary locales every week!
You can bring your own script, monologue, or song to work with, or we can start from scratch and find something that will suit you. Since classes are movement-based, it would be great to see you in a space where you can stand and move around a room. Cameras are expected to be on at all times unless otherwise stated, as we will be expressing emotions through our bodies with actions. Journals or notebooks are recommended, as a big part of being a theatrical artist is reflecting on what you've learned and how much you've progressed. Please dress comfortably yet decently with long hair tied back and no baggy/saggy clothes or jewelry that could interfere with our artistry.
