About Kathy
With over 15 years in the realm of education, my journey began right after earning my B.A. and B.Ed. in English and Criminology from York University. That foundation, complemented by a Master’s Degree in Education with a focus on Social Justice and a Collaborative Specialist designation in Education Policy, has allowed me to blend subject knowledge with a deep understanding of how to create inclusive, effective learning environments.
Schools and Programs:
Throughout my career, I've had the opportunity to teach English across various high schools and language programs in Ontario. My tenure includes several years at my current Secondary School, where I led the English department and spearheaded initiatives to integrate contemporary literature and hands-on learning projects. I've also contributed to online learning platforms, enhancing curriculum development for digital classrooms.
Special Initiatives:
One of my proudest achievements was developing and delivering a Creative Writing Workshop for high school students, which encouraged them to explore and express their voices through diverse writing styles.
I've designed and implemented various curriculums tailored to diverse learning needs, ranging from traditional literature analysis to contemporary, media-driven narratives. This approach allows me to connect with students on multiple levels, keeping lessons challenging and engaging.
Projects and Publications:
I am also co-authored academic journals, where I provided practical insights and strategies for bringing literature alive in the classroom by integrating student voice and lived experiences.
Teaching Philosophy:
My teaching philosophy centers around student engagement, inclusivity, and continuous feedback. I believe every student has unique potential, and it’s my mission to unlock and nurture that. My approach is rooted in creating an interactive and supportive atmosphere that encourages students to think critically, express themselves confidently, and develop a love for learning.
Current Pursuits:
Currently, as a PhD student at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto, I am researching ways to further integrate social justice principles into education. This ongoing work continues to enrich my teaching practices, ensuring that my methods are both effective and socially relevant.
