About Malea
I began tutoring at the age of 10 and now have decades and thousands of hours of tutoring experience. While I do see some students only for one or two sessions, I have long-lasting tutoring and coaching relationships with most of my clients, often spanning years. I hold an MFA in Writing from Sarah Lawrence College and a BS in Arts and Letters from Portland State University. I also have experience teaching in the classroom at the high school level (creative writing) and collegiate level (public speaking and all aspects of literature, composition, and creative writing). I also have taught several homeschool co-op classes in literature, composition, public speaking, and art history. I have taught, tutored, and coached individuals, as well as groups.

Our first lesson will include getting to know each other, a review of your needs and goals, and overview of how I might help. Ideally, we will also get started with a formal lesson whether that is discussing your English class literature assignment, reviewing an essay you've written, practicing public speaking, gathering details for your resume, and so on.
For reading and ELA, I currently only accept students ages 12 and up. Students should be motivated to learn and come to sessions prepared.
If you are applying to college or graduate school (including medical, PA, and other programs), I have extensive experience reviewing and improving application essays. Typically, students already have an essay draft ready which I review, edit, and return with comments, questions, and suggestions. For a few special students, I am able to also help from the very beginning of the essay process.
I have nearly 20,000 hours of experience with academic tutoring, starting when I was 10 years old and paired with a 7 year old to teach reading. In the decades since, I've honed my teaching and coaching methods.
I meet you where you are in your academic or career journey. Past students have been kids falling behind and needing to catch up, homeschooled students ready to move to the next level in their literature and writing abilities, job seekers looking to improve resume and interview skills, and more.
My approach is tailored to you. This is not cookie cutter tutoring and coaching. Our sessions will naturally change over time as your needs change and skills improve.
Our sessions will occur via Zoom and/or messages and Google Docs, depending on your area of need and assignments involved. I meet most students on Zoom regularly with communication via messages/email and assignments on Google Docs in between.

My daughter had an untraditional background as a homeschooler and Malea has been one of her educational consultants for the past decade. Malea has always given helpful feedback in a timely manner on my daughter's writings and other assignments. She edited my daughter's college essay which helped during the stressful college application process. I whole hearted recommend Malea.
