About Sebastian
In developing my teaching and tutorial skills I was always mindful of creating a relaxed and inclusive learning environment. I regularly teach and tutor students from different cultural backgrounds, for many of whom, English is their second or third language. Regardless of whether I am teaching in a lecture format, or one-on-one, I stressed the importance of engaging students by creating a dynamic and flexible approach to learning. Learning is often a back-and-forth process between the teacher and student, which is why my teaching methodology emphasizes a conversational and dialogical approach that recognizes each student as an equal partner in the learning process. Teaching is as much about the student as it is the teacher, and whether one is learning a language or taking a course, learning should be both fun and rewarding for both student and teacher.

I offer lessons as both an ESl Teacher and as an Academic Lecturer and Writing Support Teacher/Tutor.
As an ESL teacher, I offer instruction that draws on each student’s real-life experiences to build their conversational and communication skills. The purpose being to help students develop their English-speaking skills in relation to their job, family, friendships, and personal interests. I offer lessons for beginners, intermediate, and advanced students All lessons are structured in a conservational format and include the following:
• Introduce myself and students to one another through
conversation,
• Help students develop their phonetic skills,
• Identify the difference between verbs, nouns, adjectives,
and conjunctions, as well as the subject and object in a
sentence,
• Focus on distinguishing past, present, and future tenses,
• Teach students to build grammatically sound sentences,
• Demonstrate how semantic nuances and context influence
the meaning of words and sentences.
As an Academic Lecturer I teach courses on English literature, Political Theory, Social and Economic Policy, Modernism and Postmodernism, and Canadian, American and European History.
As a Writing Support Teacher/Tutor, I teach students how to write and construct essays, research papers, review course content and prepare for exams. The writing support includes:
• Teaching how to do literature reviews and taking
appropriate notes,
• Generating essay ideas,
• Organizing essays and research papers (introduction,
body, conclusion)
• How to write an Introduction, thesis statement, research
question, and conclusion,
• Correcting grammar,
• Ensuring the proper Citation format (APA, MLA, Chicago,
etc.).
The teaching support includes:
• Identifying relevant study material,
• Reviewing course content,
• Developing memory tools, such as using mind maps and
visual memory techniques, to help students identify key
ideas and connections.
What sets me apart is my over 30 years of experience working as a Lecturer and Teacher/Tutor, providing both lessons and writing support to students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. I also have an extensive experience as a government research consultant, and together with my teaching abilities, can offer students a comprehensive understanding of how to speak and write in English, both conversationally and academically. Most importantly, I believe in tailoring my lessons to respond to the unique learning skills of each student, and I offer an inclusive and open learning environment.
