Warm-Up (5–10 mins)
Purpose: Activate thinking + identify weaknesses.
Examples:
• “Explain what a thesis is.”
• “Write a quick intro to this question in 5 minutes.”
• Fix grammar errors in a short paragraph.
• Analyze a short quote.
This shows me what they actually know.
2. Explicit Teaching (10–15 mins)
This is where YOU teach a skill.
Don’t just say “write better intros.” Break it down.
For example:
If teaching essay structure:
• What is a thesis?
• What makes it sophisticated?
• How to embed keywords from the question.
• Example of a Band 6 intro.
• Why it’s Band 6.
Model it.
I want them thinking:
“Ohhh, that’s how markers think.”
Guided Practice (15–20 mins)
Now they try — but with your help.
Example:
• You create a scaffold:
• Sentence 1: Thesis
• Sentence 2: Contextualize text
• Sentence 3: Signpost arguments
You correct in real time.
Rewrite weak sentences together.
This is where improvement actually happens.
4. Independent Practice (10–15 mins)
Now they do it alone.
You:
• Time them.
• Let them write a paragraph.
• Mark it like a real teacher.
Be specific:
• “This is descriptive.”
• “You’re not analyzing the technique.”
• “You need conceptual language.”
5. Feedback + Homework (5 mins)
Give:
• 2 strengths
• 2 areas to improve
• 1 specific task for next week
Example:
Rewrite this paragraph using conceptual thesis language.
Reading & Comprehension
1. Teach annotation method.
2. Show how to identify themes.
3. Practice short-answer responses.
4. Teach how to unpack a question properly.
Essay Writing
Focus on:
• Thesis writing
• Paragraph structure (PEEL → but elevated)
• Linking to question consistently
• Integrating quotes properly
• Avoiding storytelling
