In order to get the most out of our time, I first ask my student open- and then closed-ended questions to get a sense of their current understanding of the subject. I will also try to get a read on their preferred learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc.) and cater my approach accordingly. I find that many students enjoy the figures and visual mnemonics that I draw. I ask students questions frequently. Some questions that I ask are designed to challenge them, but questions that are designed to increase their confidence and help them feel that they are learning are also important.
