About
My style of teaching is student-driven. Whether your desire is for purely personal enjoyment and enrichment or to be able to more effectively play in a performance context, I would be honored to work with you. I teach 7th grade to adults (not younger children) and focus not just on the what (how to play a piece) but on the why (the theory behind it and how to re-apply those ideas elsewhere). Often, we'll delve into the historical context, etc.
While I am well-versed in classical music theory, as a person of color, I'm aware that the European tradition is but one music framework and other cultures approach music-making with a multitude of perspectives.
Finally, I am not that teacher who will be disappointed in a student's lack of progress. Most of my students are working adults who have full lives. I'm grateful for the chance to add a bit of joy to their lives.
