One day, a family friend said their child needed help in Geometry and I thought I would help them out. Little did I know that we would both love the experience that I kept on tutoring over the years. I now tutor 10 students in math!
I graduated from Santa Clara University with a BS in Civil Engineering and am currently working as a Traffic Engineer. I also recently passed my Engineering Exam which tested my understanding of math and science.
I am currently tutoring 10 students in math. Ages range from 5 to 18. I've been tutoring for about 5 years now and love it!

When working with complicated topics, I will first see what my student understands and then explain things step by step so they can see the whole process. After that, I'll let them go as far as they can before I offer guidance again. My goal is to let them learn and offer the right amount of guidance without doing the work for them.
Once we've completed a problem, I will point out the main steps and help them identify patterns for future problems. This helps my students to quickly grasp the topic and start to make sense of things.
I'm working with some students who are 5-10 years old and are not challenged enough in school so I teach them higher grade level topics. I bring material over and math games to help them grow.
I'm working with several middle schools and high school students to better understand the topics that they are learning. They've found that their teachers aren't able to spend the time and attention with them to properly explain the material. I take time to teach them methods to understand and solve their problems and then have them explain back to me what they've learned.
The advice that I would give is:
- Don't be afraid to make mistakes. This is how we learn. We try out what we know and then we see what needs to be corrected.
- You aren't stupid if you don't get math, it just means that you need to have the concepts you are missing explained to you in a calm and clear way. You may have gaps in your understanding of math that are making current topics harder. If you clear these up, things will become easier.
A student of mine was learning about adding and subtracting negative numbers and wasn't getting the concept. I tried explaining things through something he enjoyed, games! I taught him that negative numbers were like dark characters who have negative health and to defeat them you need to attack them with positive energy. We were standing up and moving and he was immersed in the experience.
It brought such joy to both of us, but I enjoyed seeing him having fun with a topic that he had previously been confused about. Thinking outside the box is something I enjoy doing and it's part of what I love about tutoring.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Some questions I like to ask are:
- What are your struggles with math in?
- When did you start to have struggles with math?
- Do you believe that you can overcome these challenges?
- How long do you want our sessions to be and how many times a week would you like to meet?
I usually recommend sessions of 1.5 hours to really get into the material. If a student is struggling a lot with math, I would recommend 2 sessions a week.

Perfect! John Garzee was an excellent precalc tutor. He jumped in and worked hard with our daughter to identify the underlying issues with her precalc performance. He helped her fill in gaps in her understanding of concepts taught earlier in the class and got her back on track. We highly recommend John as a tutor as his skills and temperament make him a great support resource for math students.
Perfect! Very pleasant and professional , teach very well, energetic and engaging. We had a wonderful experience working with John. I will absolutely recommend him to anyone who needs help with math.

John has been great my son. My son has tried different tutors and John is the one. He has never complained about a tutoring session with John whether is in person or online. Additionally, he is great at communicating with us to coordinate and inform us about our son's progress and he's also super understanding if there is a conflict with the schedule. I definitely recommend John as a tutor. He is knowledgeable, likeable and very friendly!!
Our family is incredibly grateful to have found John. From the very beginning, we knew we’d lucked out when, before even starting instruction, John took the time to understand our children’s hobbies, interests, and learning styles. He now skillfully weaves these insights into his sessions, making math not only more accessible but genuinely engaging. Thanks to John’s thoughtful and personalized approach, both of our children have developed a deeper understanding of math concepts, improved their grades, and, most importantly, gained confidence in their abilities. We couldn’t ask for a better tutor on our children’s academic journey.

John has been tutoring my son for approximately 6 months and he has helped my son improve his grade, I am very impressed. John is very flexible, patient and kind.
John has a special talent for explaining even the most difficult math concepts in a way that is super easy to understand. Not only is John knowledgeable, but he also makes the sessions enjoyable with his sense of humor and fun personality. John encourages our child and normalizes their challenges by sharing his own experiences as a student. We are so grateful to have found such a fantastic tutor!
John is very patient and energetic. He provided excellent tutoring support in math for both my daughters, a 6th grader and 9th grader. They have more confidence in themselves doing math homework and taking on exams since they began tutoring.
I am taking pre calculus with the help of John. He helps me work through tough problems and shows me different ways to work around each one when I get stuck on something. These tricks allow me to work through problems I didn’t understand and know how to do in a more efficient way that still gets the same answer in the end. Overall my experience with John has been very good. He is easy to talk to and ask help from when needed.
John is calm, patient, and thoughtful in his tutoring process. My two sons work with him - one with precalculus, the other Japanese. They are very different personalities and learners, and both really enjoy working with John. With his guidance they work through the concepts that challenge them, and are more confident and successful students.
John is professional in his coordination and communication. We are glad to have his support and highly recommend John as a tutor.View more recommendations
