I am offering tutoring lessons in maths and English, up to GCSE level.
My approach is to first get acquainted with my students. This involves getting to know the level of understanding they are at but also encouraging them to speak with confidence if they have any queries and that I will only go at a pace they can handle.
English: I go over essay questions or an extract from a book and ask the student to explain in as much depth what they understand from the text, e.g. what literary techniques are being used? or what exactly is occurring at a particular moment in a story?. We then go back over a text (or think more about an essay question) whilst I prompt students to understand the text better or simply explain the bits they don't quite get. In the case of literature, I then ask them to start producing an answer to an essay question, and with reading comprehension they would continue reading whilst inputting the new skills I have taught them to understand the text more deeply.
Maths: In terms of individual lessons, I will go over a worksheet (or set of questions) based on the topics the child is most struggling with, and get them to complete the questions whilst showing me their working out. Anything the student is struggling with, I try to let them tell me themselves so that they know our lessons involve a two-way relationship with equal communication. I will then explain how to answer the question correctly, whether this simply requires words or I need to present a diagram or use objects to reinforce their understanding.
