About Edith

My name is Edith Nwafor. I was born on 15th July,1975 in Nsukka, Enugu state in East of Nigeria, West Africa. I did my primary Education in my village school known as Community Primary School Umuogbo ulo, Enugu Ezike in Igbo eze North local Government in Enugu state. My secondary Education was between 1988-1993 at Queen of the Rosary Secondary School Nsuka after which I proceeded to Federal Polytechnic, Oko in Anambra state where I obtained both Ordinary National Diploma(OND) and Higher National Diploma(HND) in Secretarial Administration in 2003. French language was one of the departmental courses since I wanted to be a multilingual secretary. After graduation, I enrolled in a French learning centre where I was prepared for DELF A2 and B2 which I passed with flying colors. In 2021, I obtained a Post graduate diploma in language arts at the University of Calabar, Cross River state, Nigeria. I have taught French to Junior secondary schools JSS 1-3 for over seven years. My desire to teach French is borne out of my love for this international language.

It was reported with pains how a Nigerian lost the position of the General Secretary of the United Nations during a job interview because of his inability to speak French language and up till date, Nigeria is yet to get that seat (Abati2016). Apart from being a language of international relation, French is also a language for learning other languages. It is a good base for learning other international languages like English, as 50% of current English is derived from French. Ability to speak French and English is an advantage on the international job market as it opens doors of French companies in France and other French-speaking parts of the world. Students with good levels of French are eligible for French government grants to enroll in postgraduate courses in France in the disciplines of their choice and qualify for internationally recognized degrees. (Francophoy and the French language, 2007.) In addition, the geographical location of Nigeria as a country has made French language learning very necessary, - Nigeria shares borders with Cameroun, Niger, Chad, Benin Republic- all francophones. Nigerians need the knowledge of French language to have a healthy relation with their francophone neighbors. For Nigeria to enter a relation of mutual benefits with these nations, it is imperative, at least to some extent for her to communicate with these countries in their own official language- French. Due to the global importance attached to the French language and the location of Nigeria in the middle of French-speaking countries, the federal Government of Nigeria at least theoretically accorded importance to French language when it states in its policy that "all levels of the country's education system from primary up to tertiary must offer courses in French language"(daily trust, 2016). All these show the place of French language which makes it important that Nigerians should learn how to speak and write in French language. On the issue of self-reliance after graduation, that the country has been clamoring for, French language education will do a lot of Nigerian youth good if incorporated into vocational and entrepreneurship education. As a language of international society that is only rivaled by English, French will surely serve as a linguistic visa in disciplines like Banking, Pharmacy, secretaryship, medicine, commerce scientific and technological research. It is against this backdrop that my service comes in to fill the gap, and teach willing people this unique international language of their neighbors.
