About Carrie
I have worked as both a professional tutor and as a classroom teacher. I have a BA in English, an MFA in Creative Writing, a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, and countless hours of professional development (interactive seminars, teacher collaborations, as well as various other programs and activities). I believe that students thrive when expectations are high and the right supports are provided. I also believe strongly in positive reinforcement--praising and encouraging students every step of the way. I am friendly, calm, compassionate, and professional. I treat everyone with respect and make sure my students (and their parents/guardians) know that I believe in them, I am on their team, and I am someone who they can trust. Some of my hobbies and passions are writing, nature, camping, photography, art, music, my amazing dog Stella, cooking, gardening, and spending time with friends and family.

Every child has their own unique assets, interests, and styles of learning, and it is important to me to address and engage each one. As a teacher and a tutor, I have found that students learn best when they are having fun doing so, when they can be creative and inventive, and when they are given opportunities to express themselves and to share what they know with a compassionate and enthusiastic audience.
Some of my most popular lessons have involved teaching math through dice games, teaching vocabulary words using BINGO games, teaching parts of speech using MadLibs, developing writing skills by having students write about and illustrate small, meaningful moments in their lives, improving reading comprehension through Interactive Read Alouds, and many others!
Yes, I do teach all elementary level subjects. The platform made me specify a specific subject area.
I am also a big proponent of Social Emotional Learning (SEL), where students work on regulating their emotions, expressing their feelings, calming their bodies, learning about empathy, and so on.
I deeply appreciate and cherish the connections I make with, and the attention I can give to, students when we are working one-on-one, in pairs, or in small groups, which is why tutoring is a better fit for me than the classroom.
Few things are more gratifying than helping children learn to read and write, to improve upon their existing skills, or to see their faces light up when they make a meaningful connection, or when a new skill or concept finally clicks!
I truly look forward to helping your child(ren) learn, and to inspire in them a love of learning!

I had the honor of having Carrie tutor and facilitate distance learning with my daughter while I worked full-time from home. She began as a tutor to help
my daughter develop some of the areas of need outlined in her IEP in 5th Grade. This included reading comprehension, fluency, and spelling.
Once Shelter in Place began, Carrie assisted in the transition to distance learning. She helped make sure my daughter logged in and out of her virtual classroom each day, that she understood her class and homework assignments, and she ensured that the assignments were completed on time.
Carrie also provided fun enrichment activities. These included working on Mad Libs to practice the various parts of speech, drawing pictures of scenes from the books they were reading, writing about interesting things that had happened that day, and encouraging time spent outdoors with activities like nature scavenger hunts.
Carrie made the assignments and projects very engaging. She also explained things in a way that my daughter understood and remembered. I would always hear giggles in the other room when they were working together. She has made reading more enjoyable for my daughter by taking turns reading with her, and creating different voices for each character. Together, they read
five novels—some assigned by the classroom teacher and others chosen by my daughter. Carrie provided packets with comprehension questions to go along with each book, which they worked through together. Whenever possible, she encouraged my daughter to watch the movie adaptations, and then compare and contrast the two versions.
My daughter is a bit shy, but Carrie was patient and encouraging, and before long, my daughter was enjoying their sessions together.
I highly recommend Carrie as a tutor!I've had the honor of knowing Carrie for many years. She is a wonderful human and teacher. Her students are so lucky to get to learn from someone so incredibly kind, creative, skilled and compassionate. She is extremely patient and kids, teens and adults gravitate towards her calming energy. When she sees someone feeling down about their abilities Carrie has such a natural way of helping her students believe in themselves. If you are looking for a kind tutor for a child struggling academically or socially, I highly recommend connecting with Carrie.
Carrie is highly educated in her field, and she enjoys sharing that knowledge with those seeking it. She provided my kids with reading comprehension activities throughout the school shut downs that were invaluable. Highly recommend.
