First we will pinpoint the difficulties you are having with the subject and then we will work through the problem using multiple examples. Working together, we will figure out the structure of our lessons that suits your learning style best.

In my experience, focusing on application encourages active participation and promotes better understanding. We will fill in the gaps of misunderstanding and I will address the subject from different perspectives.

  • 1) When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

Since my childhood I have always been curious about the world around me, how things work, how stars and plants work to how our body and cells work. I remember that I had several books describing stars, planets, galaxies, animals, cells, biology, etc. That is why I am interested in math, physics and chemistry. Later on I pursued my education in biomedical engineering and right now working in the nanomedicine field with more biology and chemistry involved than math and physics. However, I never lost my interest for physics and math and found myself explaining the math much better and other subjects. That's why I chose to teach mathematics.
  • 2) What makes you passionate about your subject?

Math in particular is not tangible and that is what makes it difficult for students, I enjoy explaining complex subjects in a language that is easy for students to understand, it is like a challenge to me. Without math, we could not have achieved many technological advances that we have today. Although math is not tangible, we can feel the indirect effect of it in our life. We may one day predict human behaviour with math! Who knows!
  • 3) What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

Explaining a subject to other people and seeing the Aha! moment. That's what I like about tutoring. I enjoy that feeling of transferring knowledge to others and now they are equipped with that knowledge to solve the problems. When I tutor, I feel useful and that feels good.
  • 4) Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

Yes. I have had a lot of great teachers during my high school years and many great supervisors during my undergrad and grad studies. During my high school, I had a Physics teacher, who not only taught me Physics but he also triggered my curiosity about the world around me, he was open minded about new ideas. I also had a supervisor during my undergraduate studies that helped me to believe in myself. She helped me to publish a paper during my undergraduate studies. That gave me a lot of self confidence and changed my life. That made me realize that having a good mentor/tutor in life is invaluable.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

I try not to blame myself for what I did wrong and what I might have done better, this will prevent me from getting into the vicious cycle of regret-blame-wasting time. Instead every day I try to have some form of incremental improvement. Reading 2 pages of a book, understanding a new thing, doing a new thing, they are all incremental improvements that will accumulate over time and make you successful.
    To put it mathematically:
    1^365 = 1
    1.01^365 = 37.78
    0.99^365 = 0.025
