About Macy
My name is Macy Merrens, and I am a first year Politics and International Relations student at Durham University. Being a maths tutor is really rewarding for me because, like many students, I wasn't always very good at maths. I found it incredibly frustrating that I always felt 2 steps behind all my peers, and dreaded the thought of any sort of maths test or homework. However, once I sought tuition for myself, I began to gain confidence, and felt empowered to not only achieve a high GCSE grade, but to go on to take it for A-level. By guiding and encouraging students, I hope to show them that they are capable of excelling in maths and learning to love it too, as I did.

I believe that the key to mastering maths is both practice and confidence. This is why my lesson style is focused on working through topic questions with my student instead of having them just watch me make copious notes. The worked examples we create together will form the basis of material they can refer to when revising topics for exams and tests. I think this style of teaching ensures that students remain engaged and understand the practical application of a mathematical concept. I also believe that encouraging my students and giving them constructive praise is crucial to ensuring they grow in confidence, and feel empowered to progress to more difficult topics which will improve their marks. My lessons run for an hour at a time to ensure that students feel they can concentrate throughout and get the most out of it. I am able to teach up to and including GCSE level. I had a maths tutor myself during secondary school which has taught what works and what doesn't, and I also did mentoring in both Spanish and maths throughout sixth form. These experiences ensure I am fully equipped to help students progress with maths, as do my GCSEs and A-levels. I achieved a grade 9 in GCSE maths and an A in A-level maths.
